It portrays a highly romanticised version of the seasoned warrior, characteristic Florentine artistic qualities heavily influenced this piece.
He wears the muscled cuirass and paludamentum of a Roman Legatus (cloak fastened at the left shoulder and worn by commanders, regular troops called it a pallium and had it fastened at both shoulders) but has no laurel wreath on his head.
It would seem Ferucci was trying for an aesthetic of Caesar as a great general and leader, but wanted to avoid the dictator and deification issues that some criticise Caesar for. Either way, this is a masterpiece of Florentine marble sculpture.
This piece is in the Met, NY, USA.
