What is Time Dilation in Space?
Space is a place that has different physical laws than Earth. for example, gravity has much less effect in space outside of the atmosphere and the gravitational pull of the Earth.

 Another aspect of life that changes drastically in space is time. Time dilation is the scientific term for the alterations in the passage of time that occur in the middle of space. One piece of evidence of the effects of time dilation in space is that the International Space Station has clocks that are minutely slower than those on earth.

Why is the dilation of time in space important? It is necessary to understand this phenomenon in order to accurately determine the effects of space travel on the human body. Specifically, it explains why astronauts age more slowly in space than they do on earth.


 Astronauts age 0.007 seconds slower for every half hour in space than they would have if they had spent that time on the earth. This effect is caused by the laws of gravity and the effects of relative velocity.

 Relative velocity is the velocity or speed that one object has in relation to another object. In space, time passes differently for objects that have different velocities. This is because the position of an individual in a gravitational field in space is much different than that of an individual on Earth.

Time Dilation Causes
There are multiple causes of time dilation in space. These include gravity, which is an individual's position in a gravitational field that affects the passage of time. 

If person A is high in the gravitational field and person B is on the ground, time passes more slowly for person A. It appears that time passes more slowly for those who are not in a gravitational field. The second is relative velocity, which means an individual in space moves faster than those on the earth.

How Does Time Work in Space?

Is there time in space? 

Time exists in space. However, it moves more slowly than it does on the earth. The measurement of time in space is done by comprising the clocks on the International Space Station to those on Earth.

 Other studies on the effects of space and time include sending one person up to space and analyzing the effects of Earth's gravity on their twin. Researchers pay special attention to the difference in the aging process of the space-bound twin.

Since the creation of the theory of relativity by Albert Einstein, many scientists have created theories regarding the workings of time in space. 

Einstein's first foray into attempting to understand this process, in the early twentieth century, began with the effects of the speed of light. He theorized that if an individual moved faster than the speed of light, they would be able to essentially travel through time.

 The perceived time it took for them to get to a destination would be shorter than that recorded on the earth.

In 1971, researchers J.C. Hafele and R.E. Keating flew clocks on jets and compared the passage of time as recorded by these clocks to the record of clocks on earth. The results of this experiment confirmed that time dilation was a verifiable fact. 

The next major researchers to examine time dilation were Scott Kelly and Mark Kelly, twin astronauts. Scott lived on the International Space Station and Mark lived on the Earth. As a result of this travel, Scott aged slightly slower than his brother. 

As stated above, Mark did not move anywhere near the speed of light. Therefore, drastic time dilation did not occur. However, this study did open the door for future research.

Time in Space vs. Earth

Is time different in space than on earth? There are multiple differences related to the changes in time that occur in space compared to time on earth. A few examples are:

These changes in time result in small but important differences in the aging process. This has been described as the twin paradox. This paradox has been examined through multiple studies in which one twin was sent to space and one twin was kept on the earth. 

While no person has actually moved at the speed of light, these research experiments have analyzed time dilation. The effects of aging on the human body were the focus of these current experiments.

Another facet of the time dilation twin paradox is that the twin in space would perceive that time on Earth had moved slower than it had in space. Thus, in their view, the Earth twin would be younger than they were. However, only the Earth twin would be correct.
